About the Australia House

The Australia House is a new and exciting art project which is part of the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennial, one of the world's largest international art festivals held in the rustic mountainous Echigo-Tsumari region of Niigata Prefecture. For the fourth Triennial, held from 26 July to 13 September this year, three Australian artists and a curator will transform an abandoned rustic Japanese-style farmhouse into an art installation called "Australia House". They will work in residence in collaboration with the Urada community adding to the ideal of the so-called "Tsumari Method" with the hope to create a unique community with an Australian identity. The house will also become a base for cultural exchange between Australia and Japan and provide opportunities for future collaboration between Australian and Japanese artists. The project is organised as part of the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennal, in collaboration with the Australian Embassy in Tokyo, Australia-Japan Foundation and Asialink.
